La salle de lecture du British Museum

Le lecteur écrivait au directeur du British Museum en indiquant sa profession, son domicile et le but précis pour lequel il demandait à être admis, deux jours au moins à l'avance, avec la recommandation écrite d'un chef de famille de position reconnue qui le connaissait personnellement. « Études », « Recherches » ou « Travail littéraire » ne suffisaient pas ; les administrateurs n'acceptaient pas la parole d'un hôtelier ou d'un logeur pour ses pensionnaires. La carte d'admission était accordée pour un jour à six mois, n'était pas cessible, et était redatée au renouvellement.

Dans la salle, le lecteur cherchait l'ouvrage dans le catalogue général et remplissait un bulletin par livre : son nom, la date, la lettre et le numéro de sa place, la cote, l'auteur, la date de publication et le titre. Les employés apportaient le livre à la place, et le lecteur en répondait jusqu'à ce qu'il reprenne le bulletin. Les bulletins blancs étaient pour les livres, les bleus pour la musique, les roses pour les cartes.

Bearer fabrique les papiers d'un investigateur pour L'Appel de Cthulhu et toute campagne de jeu de rôle des années 1920 ou 1930 : le passeport qu'un consul aurait rempli, avec les visas et tampons de frontière qu'une campagne y laisse, et les permis, certificats et bulletins de l'époque, à imprimer ou à partager.
