Vérifier un papier

Un papier s'accorde avec les faits de son jour, ou non. Aucune des vérifications ci-dessous ne demande un laboratoire : un calendrier, la loi et un regard attentif. Chacune repose sur un document ou une loi que Bearer a lus, cités au pied de la page.

Dans Bearer, un patron peut faire falsifier n'importe quel papier : le faux porte les erreurs que les vérifications ci-dessous trouvent, et la fiche du Gardien les énumère pour la table.

Bearer fabrique les papiers d'un investigateur pour L'Appel de Cthulhu et toute campagne de jeu de rôle des années 1920 ou 1930 : le passeport qu'un consul aurait rempli, avec les visas et tampons de frontière qu'une campagne y laisse, et les permis, certificats et bulletins de l'époque, à imprimer ou à partager.

Le modèle et sa date

Chaque modèle a été imprimé pour une suite d'années, et un papier daté hors de celles-ci n'est pas sur le bon modèle. Le Waffenschein allemand sur le modèle du Reich existe du 1er octobre 1928, date d'entrée en vigueur de la loi de 1928, au 31 mars 1938. Le certificat australien d'enregistrement des étrangers existe du 20 janvier 1921, date d'application de son règlement, jusqu'à la suspension de la loi le 4 juin 1926. La carte d'identité britannique de l'enregistrement national existe à partir du 29 septembre 1939, la nuit où la loi de ce mois de septembre fut appliquée.

La durée permise par la loi

Un papier valable plus longtemps que sa loi ne le permettait n'a pas été délivré par ce bureau. Les durées lues :

Les visas et les tampons dans leur ordre

Un visa est daté après le passeport où il est écrit, et un tampon d'entrée après le visa qui l'a permise. Un tampon frappé après l'expiration du passeport est un passeport utilisé quand il ne valait plus. Un livret renouvelé plus de fois que son modèle n'a de lignes pour cela a été remplacé, pas renouvelé de nouveau.

Des calendriers à eux

Certains bureaux dataient en années à eux, et une année décalée d'un an est une erreur qu'aucun employé ne faisait. Les fonctionnaires italiens ajoutaient l'année de l'ère fasciste après la date, en chiffres romains, comptée depuis le 29 octobre 1922 : Anno VI en mai 1928, VIII en avril 1930, XVI en novembre 1937. Le passeport chinois de 1934 est daté en années de la République, la vingt-troisième pour 1934. Les consuls japonais dataient leurs visas en années de l'ère Shōwa.

Les titres et les noms du jour

Un papier nomme le souverain et les lieux comme on les appelait ce jour-là. Le livret italien délivré au nom du roi porte IMPERATORE D'ETIOPIA parmi ses titres sur un livret de 1942 : un livret daté d'avant la proclamation de l'Empire, le 9 mai 1936, ne le peut pas. La municipalité qui visait les passes pour l'intérieur de la Chine en 1931 était celle de Peiping, nom que portait alors Pékin.

La photographie et son cachet

Sur les livrets allemand, suisse et polonais lus, le bureau frappait son cachet en travers d'un coin de la photographie, moitié sur l'image et moitié sur la page, pour qu'on ne puisse pas la changer. Une photographie sans marque en travers, sur ces modèles, a été mise là par quelqu'un d'autre.
