The Weimar Waffenschein

The law on firearms and ammunition of 12 April 1928 ended the disarmament of the first post-war years and, from 1 October 1928, required a Waffenschein issued by the police and valid for the whole Reich to carry a firearm in public, save hunting arms, for which a hunting licence sufficed. Buying a firearm needed an Erwerbschein, which the Waffenschein or a yearly hunting licence could replace. Both were given only to reliable persons. The law of 1938 replaced it, and from November 1938 Jews were forbidden to hold any weapon.

The implementing ordinance of 13 July 1928 is read in the Reichsgesetzblatt, with the model of the Waffenschein it annexes (Anlage III), and Bearer prints that model: the number, "Gültig auf 1 Jahr", the warning that it does not cover carrying arms at public meetings and processions, the holder, whether a citizen of the Reich or not (the other struck out), the leave to carry and the purchase approved with it, the office and its stamp; on the back the weapons sold to the holder on it, the photograph and his own signature. It was issued by the police of the holder's residence, or in urgent cases by that of his stay, and then for three months at most. No Waffenschein actually issued has been found.

Bearer makes an investigator's papers for Call of Cthulhu and any 1920s or 1930s tabletop campaign: the passport a consul would have filled in, with the visas and frontier stamps a campaign leaves in it, and the permits, certificates and tickets of the period, to print or to share.

• the office is written on the card; the seal carries only the word POLIZEIBEHÖRDE, and from 1933 no emblem. What would settle it: a seal of a German police office of the period.
