Water Buffalo

The water buffalo comes from India and Southeast Asia and is now kept from the Mediterranean to the Americas and Australia, always near water, marsh and river. Herds of ten to twenty graze morning and evening and rest in cover through the heat, led by old cows. Cows with calves can hurt a careless herder and a wounded bull has killed people; the animal pulls ploughs and carts and gives rich milk, meat, fine leather and dung for the fields.
