Hippopotamus
Hippopotamus amphibius · Mammal
Herds of twenty to a hundred rest in shallow rivers, lakes and swamps by day and come ashore at dusk to graze for hours. It kills people, mostly hunters and boaters who stumble on a herd unawares in times of drought. Hunters took its meat, its ivory canines and its thick hide for shields and whips.
