Grey Heron
Ardea cinerea · Bird
A tall grey wading bird, up to a metre high, that stands motionless in the shallows of lakes, rivers, marshes and estuaries across Europe, Asia and Africa, hunting fish mostly at dawn and dusk. It feeds alone but nests in colonies, the heronries, at the top of tall trees. Roast heron was a medieval delicacy: 400 were served at the feast of an Archbishop of York in 1465.
