Beavers live in family colonies of up to a dozen along wooded rivers and lakes, working mostly at night and spending the winter under the ice beside stores of branches. Their dams flood fields and roads. People took the pelt for garments and felt hats, the castoreum for medicine and perfume, and ate the meat, notably in Lent.
