American Alligator
Alligator mississippiensis · Reptile
A big crocodilian of the south-eastern United States, males reaching 3.4 to 4.8 m, living in cypress swamps, marshes, rivers, ponds and wet prairies. It basks in the morning and hunts on land on warm nights, and when the water freezes it lies still with only its snout through the ice. Attacks are rare but real: at least 28 people killed in the United States since 1970. It is farmed by the thousands for its hide and meat.
