White-throated Dipper
Cinclus cinclus · Bird
A plump, short-tailed bird of 18 cm, slate grey with a white throat and breast, living by fast, cold, rocky streams and rivers from Europe to Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, often near waterfalls. It plunges in head first and works along the stream bed against the current, wings half open, to pick up insect larvae, small shrimps, snails and little fish. Pairs hold a stretch of 0.5 to 2 km of stream; when the water freezes, birds move down to the lowlands or the coast. It is the national bird of Norway, and where it lives the water is clean.
