Mallard
Anas platyrhynchos · Bird
The mallard lives on almost any fresh or salt water, from park ponds and rivers to lakes and estuaries, across the northern world. Outside the breeding season the birds gather in large flocks; northern birds fly south for the winter. It is a major game bird, eaten since ancient times, and almost every domestic duck descends from it.
