The tallest flying bird of South and Central America, a white stork up to 1.4 m with a 2.6 m wingspan, a bare black head, a 30 cm upturned bill and a red pouch at the neck; the emblem of the Pantanal, found from Mexico to Argentina in flooded savannas, marshes and by rivers and ponds. It feels for frogs, fish, snakes and snails in shallow water. Lifelong pairs reuse huge stick nests 15 to 30 m up in lone trees. Before it was protected it was hunted for its meat and feathers.
