Greylag Goose
Anser anser · Bird
A big grey goose that breeds in marshes, fens and bogs and on lake islands, and winters in flocks of up to thousands on salt marshes, estuaries, steppe and pasture near water. Families migrate together, though many European birds now stay near their breeding grounds. It is the wild ancestor of the farmyard goose and gave people meat, fat, eggs, down for bedding and quills for writing.
