Green Iguana
Iguana iguana · Reptile
A big green lizard, up to about 2 m from snout to tail and 4 to 6 kg, that lives high in the rainforest canopy near rivers and ponds, from southern Mexico to Paraguay and the Caribbean. It basks by day, drops 15 m into water or brush unhurt, and when cornered lashes with its tail, bites and claws. Called "gallina de palo", the chicken of the trees, it has been eaten for millennia with its eggs, and is farmed for food and leather.
