Yacare Caiman
Caiman yacare · Reptile
A caiman of 2 to 3 m (males 40 to 50 kg) of the lakes, rivers and wetlands of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay, in the millions in the Pantanal and gathering in groups at water holes. It eats mostly snails and fish, cracking the shells in its jaws, and sometimes snakes or capybaras; it is little threat to people. Hunted almost to oblivion for its leather in the 1980s, it is now farmed, and its meat and even its urine (for perfume) are sold.
