Red Deer
Cervus elaphus · Mammal
Red deer graze open woodland, clearings and forest edges at dawn and dusk, and herds of hinds can run to hundreds in summer. In the autumn rut the stags gather harems and will fight, so a traveller keeps clear of a roaring stag. Hunters took the meat, the hide, the fur, the antlers and the teeth.
