Moor frog
Rana arvalis · Amphibian
A brown frog 5 to 7 cm long of the acid waters of bogs and marshes, wet woods, taiga and steppe, from north-eastern France across to Siberia and up beyond the Arctic Circle in Finland. Right after hibernation, for a few days of the spring mating, the males turn a striking sky blue. It hunts beetles and other small creatures by night, and when grabbed it sometimes squirts urine, hence its French nickname "pissing frog".
