A green to brown frog of 5 to 12 cm living in ponds, marshes, slow rivers, damp woods and wet meadows from northern France to Russia. It is a hybrid of the pool frog and the marsh frog, and spends the winter buried in the mud at the bottom of the water. It is the frog of frog legs, eaten above all in France, Germany and Italy.
