Coypu
Myocastor coypus · Mammal
A big South American water rodent of 4 to 9 kilos, farmed for its fur and now loose in the marshes, lake edges and slow streams of North America, Europe and Asia. It feeds mostly at night in groups of a male with several females and their young, and bites people and dogs when cornered. Its fur (nutria) went into clothes and hats, its lean meat is eaten (pâté de ragondin in western France), and it strips whole marshes bare.
