Esfand Seeds

Steeped in water the seeds give a yellow dye, in alcohol a red one, used in western Asia to dye carpets and wool. Burnt, they make a fragrant smoke. The ancient Greeks took the powdered seeds against tapeworm and recurring fevers; the seeds are poisonous and hallucinogenic, and France has banned them since 2005.
