Hop Cones

Plant · Common

The female cones bitter and flavour beer and keep it from spoiling; before them, beer was mostly flavoured with other herbs such as bog myrtle. King Pepin gave hops to a Paris monastery in 768, they were grown at Freising by 859, and in 1516 the Bavarian purity law allowed only barley, hops and water in beer. Iranian folk medicine uses them as a sedative.
