Willow Ptarmigan
Lagopus lagopus · Bird
A grouse of willow and birch scrub on the tundra and moors, active by day and gathering in close flocks in winter, when it roosts in burrows dug in the snow. It mostly walks and runs rather than flies far. It is a prized game bird for the pot, and the red grouse of the Scottish moors raises the value of the land it lives on.
