Western Capercaillie
Tetrao urogallus · Bird
The largest grouse, cocks of 4 to 5 kg in black with a red brow, hens half that in barred brown, living in mature conifer forest across the taiga and, further south, only in mountains: Pyrenees, Alps, Jura, Vosges, Carpathians. In winter it lives almost entirely on conifer needles, and in spring the cocks display at dawn on traditional leks. A prized game bird, once reserved for patricians in central Europe.
