Wapiti
Cervus canadensis · Mammal
A great deer of open forest and forest edges in North America and Asia, from the Pacific rainforests to the Rockies, boreal forest, upland moors and grassland. Cows gather in herds of up to 400 in summer; in the autumn rut bulls bugle, guard harems of twenty cows and wrestle with their antlers, sometimes to serious injury. Mountain herds follow the snow up in spring and come down in autumn, feeding mostly at dawn and dusk.
