Steller Sea Lion
Eumetopias jubatus · Mammal
The largest sea lion: bulls reach 3.4 m and over a ton, cows up to 350 kg. It lives along the cold North Pacific coasts from California through Alaska to the Kuril Islands and northern Japan, between the shore and the edge of the shelf, pupping from May to July on remote islands and hunting pollock, mackerel, salmon, cod and octopus. Native peoples hunted it for meat and clothing and stretched its skin over kayaks and baidarkas; a subsistence hunt of 300 animals or fewer goes on in Alaska. Hunting for its meat, fur and oil helped bring its numbers down.
