Saltwater Crocodile
Crocodylus porosus · Reptile
The largest living reptile: males reach 6 m and 1,000 to 1,500 kg, haunting mangrove swamps, river deltas and rivers from eastern India to northern Australia, and riding sea currents between islands. It basks or loiters by day and hunts mostly at night, and males fiercely guard their stretch of water. It kills people every year, and its skin is the most valuable of all crocodile leathers, now farmed.
