Sable
Martes zibellina · Mammal
A small solitary hunter of the Siberian forest floor that hides in its den for days in storms or when hunted. Its fur was among the most precious in the world: the tsars demanded it as tribute and the hunt for it drove Russia across Siberia. Overhunting nearly wiped it out early in the twentieth century.
