Red Squirrel
Sciurus vulgaris · Mammal
A shy, solitary tree squirrel of Eurasia whose ear tufts grow longer in its thick winter coat, which ranges from red to brown, grey or black, the belly always white. It is commonest in large pine and spruce forests and also lives in broadleaf woods, eating conifer seeds, beechnuts, acorns, nuts and fungi and burying stores in the ground or in trees, which spreads the seeds. It does not hibernate but slows down in winter; in Britain and Italy it is giving way to the introduced grey squirrel.
