Lowland Paca
Cuniculus paca · Mammal
A spotted rodent of 6 to 12 kg that sleeps by day in a burrow or hollow log near water and feeds at night, fleeing into the water when chased. Pairs share a small territory of a few hectares. Its meat is highly prized all over its range, though men who eat it can catch leptospirosis; it also raids yams, cassava, cocoa and fruit.
