European Pine Marten
Martes martes · Mammal
A cat-sized, tree-climbing hunter with rich brown fur and a cream bib, living in old forests from western Europe to western Siberia and on Mediterranean islands. It hunts by night and at dusk and dens in hollow trees, old nests or rock crevices, alone. Long trapped for its fine winter fur, it is now protected in several countries.
