Common snipe
Gallinago gallinago · Bird
A small brown wader with a very long straight bill, probing the mud of bogs, marshes, tundra and wet meadows for earthworms and fly larvae. In spring the male dives from high circles so that his tail feathers make a bleating hum, the "drumming". Northern birds winter south to Africa. Its erratic flight is so hard to hit that the hunter's word "sniper" most likely comes from it; about a million and a half are still shot each year in Europe for the table and for sport.
