A tall grey bird over a metre high with a wingspan up to 2.4 m, nesting in quiet wooded swamps and bogs of the taiga across Europe and Siberia. Pairs dance with bows, leaps and pirouettes. In autumn they fly south in great V-shaped flocks, gathering by thousands on lakes and fields (over 260,000 at once on one French lake), to winter in Spain, North Africa and India. It eats roots, grain, insects and small animals, and was once a prized dish at the tables of French kings and lords.
