A solitary forager that feeds in the morning and evening and lies up in thick cover by day, sleeping through the winter from late autumn to spring. It rarely attacks unless surprised at close range with cubs or over food, but then it can kill. Hunters took its meat and hide, and its gall bladder fetched high prices for traditional medicine in Asia.
