Black grouse
Lyrurus tetrix · Bird
A big grouse of the forest edges, moors and wet heaths of northern Eurasia, the glossy black cock weighing over a kilo with a lyre-shaped tail. In spring the males gather at dawn on open ground or bogs, the lek, puffing their necks and fanning their tails, rarely more than forty birds in the west and up to two hundred in Russia. In winter it flocks in dense forest, eats conifer needles and birch buds, and sleeps in snow burrows. It is game, under a hunting quota in France.
