American Bison
Bison bison · Mammal
The great grazer of the North American prairie, a bull sometimes topping a tonne, living in cow herds and bachelor bands on plains, river valleys, sagebrush, open woods and the boreal north. Once some sixty million, it was slaughtered to a few hundred by the late 1880s, partly to ruin the Plains peoples who drew food, clothing, tools and shelter from it. It looks slow but runs at over 60 km/h, and at Yellowstone it has injured three times as many visitors as the bears.
