Blackberries

Plant · Common

Blackberries are eaten raw or in pies, jellies, jams, wine and liqueurs; a Danish bog body 2,500 years old had them in her stomach. Fruit, leaves and stems have dyed cloth and hair. British and Irish folklore forbids picking them after Old Michaelmas Day (11 October), when the devil has spoiled them; by then they often turn mouldy.
