A form of lignite coal derived from fossilised driftwood, much of it from trees of the monkey-puzzle family, buried in marine sediments. More compact and tougher than ordinary lignite. Carved into jewellery for over four thousand years; the Whitby variety was fashionable in Victorian mourning jewellery.
