Walrus
Odobenus rosmarus · Mammal
Walruses gather in large herds, males and females apart outside the breeding season, on Arctic ice and on rocky or sandy beaches. Bulls settle their rank by fighting with their tusks; the herds move north in summer and south in winter. People hunted them for ivory, hide and oil, and northern peoples used the meat and bones for food and tools.
