Townsend's Big-eared Bat
Corynorhinus townsendii · Mammal
A medium-sized bat of 7 to 12 g with extremely long, flexible ears, found from southern British Columbia down the Pacific coast, into the Great Plains and central Mexico. It needs large cavities to roost: caves, abandoned mines and buildings, hollows at the foot of trees. In winter it hibernates alone in caves, tunnels and mineshafts, waking often; in summer the females raise their single pups in maternity colonies of 12 to 200, sometimes over 1,000 in the eastern United States. A quiet 'whisper bat', it feeds almost only on moths.
