Swarm of Bats
Bats and owls swarming over a sleeper, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters by Francisco de Goya, 1799 · Francisco de Goya, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, Los Caprichos plate 43, etching and aquatint, 1799, CC0, Wikimedia Commons

Swarms of bats pour out of caves and ruined towers at dusk, a whirling cloud that blinds and confuses anyone caught in it. They bite but rarely do much harm. Disturbing a roost by torchlight is the usual way to meet one.
