Spotted Sandgrouse
Pterocles senegallus · Bird
A bird of about 33 cm of the stony deserts and semi-arid lands of North Africa, Arabia, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan, feeding on seeds and green plants such as spurge. Flocks fly many kilometres to waterholes around dawn, when the air is cool; most stay put, though some winter in Pakistan and western India. The male soaks his specially made belly feathers at the water, and back at the nest the chicks suck the water from them.
