Spotted Hyena
Crocuta crocuta · Mammal
Spotted hyenas live in clans ruled by their females across the open savanna, acacia bush, semi-desert and mountain forests of Africa south of the Sahara, up to 4,000 metres in Ethiopia. They hunt as much as they scavenge, take livestock, and have killed people, above all the sick and the sleeping during epidemics. Healers in several countries use their tails, paws and other parts in medicine and charms.
