Snow Leopard
Panthera uncia · Mammal
The snow leopard haunts steep, rocky slopes of the high mountains of Central Asia, from the Himalaya and Tibet to Siberia, mostly between 3,000 and 4,500 metres, among alpine meadows, dry shrubland, bare scree and open conifer woods; in winter it may follow its prey down the valleys. It hunts alone at dawn and dusk and is not known ever to have attacked a person in the wild, though it takes herders' livestock. It is poached for its pelt and for bones sold to traditional Chinese medicine.
