Silkworm
Bombyx mori · Insect · Domestic
The silkworm is the caterpillar of a moth from China that no longer lives wild and is reared only by people, on white mulberry leaves. China guarded the secret for thousands of years and smuggling the worms out was punished by death. Each cocoon unwinds into about half a mile of thread, and the pupae left after the silk is reeled are eaten from Assam to Korea and Japan.
