A grey wading bird 1.1 to 1.4 m tall, with a wingspan of 2.3 to 2.6 m and a huge shoe-shaped bill ending in a sharp nail, living in the freshwater swamps of central tropical Africa, from South Sudan, its stronghold in the Sudd, down to Zambia. It stands motionless for long spells, often on floating vegetation, then strikes at lungfish, catfish, watersnakes and even baby crocodiles. Silent most of the time, it clatters its bill at the nest. It is docile with people.
