Sea Pig
Scotoplanes · Echinoderm
Deep-sea sea cucumbers that walk the mud of the abyssal plains of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans on six pairs of enlarged tube feet worked by water pressure, taking organic matter from the ooze; they smell out fresh food such as whale carcasses. They often gather in hundreds, 300 to 600 in early hauls, and young crabs shelter beneath them. Brought too close to the surface, their bodies fall apart.
