A blazing red wading bird of the mudflats, mangroves and river mouths of northern South America and Trinidad, red only because it eats red crustaceans (the young are grey and brown). It flies in big flocks and nests in colonies of hundreds, sometimes 2,000 nests in the mangroves. Its feathers went into native featherwork and later fed a heavy poaching trade; its meat and eggs are eaten.
