Saiga
Saiga tatarica · Mammal
Saiga graze the flat dry steppe and semi-desert of Kazakhstan, Kalmykia and Mongolia in herds of thirty or forty, and some herds trek south for the winter. Only the males carry horns, and the horn ground for fever remedies in Chinese medicine has driven so much poaching that the species is critically endangered. Hunters also sold the meat and the skins.
