Rock Ptarmigan
Lagopus muta · Bird
A grouse of barren rocky mountainsides and tundra, from Greenland, Iceland and the Arctic to the Alps, Pyrenees and Japanese Alps, white in winter and grey-brown in summer. Its feathered feet work as snowshoes, and in winter it gathers in flocks and moves down to lower, more sheltered ground. It is a popular game bird of the Alaskan back country and a prized dish of Icelandic festive meals; it is the bird of Nunavut and gave its Sámi name to the Swedish town of Kiruna.
