The wild ancestor of the domestic and town pigeon, native to western and southern Europe, North Africa and on into South Asia, and carried around the world on European ships from 1603. Wild birds live in flocks of 50 to 500 on rock formations and cliffs and nest in crevices, in caves, canyons and sea cliffs, even in the Sahara wherever there are rocks, water and some plants. Tamed perhaps 5,000 years ago, its descendants serve as homing and carrier pigeons, as food and as pets.
