A plump game bird about 32 cm long, sandy brown with a black-bordered white throat and red bill and legs, of France, Iberia and northern Italy. It lives on stony scrubland, dry hills, arid plateaus and waste ground, and stays all year. It would rather run than fly, and gathers in coveys, up to seventy birds in autumn and winter.
